This Bellingham Handpicked Viognier is part of the Bellingham The Bernard Series, a tribute to founder Bernard Podlahuk. This visionary man did everything to make South Africa a wine region, also known as 'The Maverick winemaker'. He was never satisfied with a medium level product but always wanted the best. A visionary and innovative man, something that comes forward in this wine. The Viognier grapes for this wine come from a 16 years old vineyard, located at the foot of mount Perdeberg in Agter-Paarl. The soil mainly consists of weathered granite and the vineyard brings only 5 tons of ruit. The grapes are handpicked and once vinified 50% of them is matured in French oak casks. The other 50% matures in tanks and before the wine is blended it matures (together) on the dregs for about 8 months.
The result is a clear and golden wine with a young green reflection. Very rich with peach and white pears, spices and honey aromas. The finish is refreshing and fruity with hints of vanilla. A perfect companion of spicy fusion dishes like pork wontons, five spices steak, honey roasted duck or a curry. It has an aging potential of about 5 years.
