The Laphroaig 33 years old Strong Characters – Chapter One Donald Johnston is an older Islay single malt from the Laphroaig distillery bottled in the Strong Characters series. This series is an ode to the people who were of much influence in the history of the distillery. This first release is an ode to Donald Johnston, the oldest of the two brothers who founded the distillery. The whisky is a 33 year old one which matured in ex bourbon casks followed by a sherry cask finish. It got bottled in 2024 at 43,7% ABV.
Official tasting notes:
Nose: Notes of crème brûlée, stewed rhubarb and apple with custard
Palate: The gentle sherry influence has added notes of fruit cake and subtle spice
Finish: The peat element reveals savoury aromas of smoked ham, cured mackerel, and a herbal, almost grassy smoke
