The Mortlach Rare Old is the first release in the new Mortlach single malt series. This Speyside single malt with no age statement will be accompanied (in 2015) by a 18 and 25 years old as well as a travel retail release. This Mortlach is not like most expect heavily sherried. This new bottling brings to light a complex, warming and spicy side of Mortlach's personality.
Nose: sugary biscuits (maybe Nice biscuits), baked apple and crushed nuts. Fudge and herbal, leafy notes persist
Palate: rich and full of palate entry, with spicy notes of cinnamon sticks and oak. Then there's vanilla, raisin and biscuit-y notes paired with dark jam (Jammy Dodgers?). That leafy, earthy note from the nose continues on the palate too
Finish: warm and drying with cinnamon, pepper and vanilla
