Absinthe is a strong alcoholic beverage made from anise, wormwood and other herbs.
The alcohol content of absinthe ranges from 40% to 80%. The drink has been prohibited a long time because of the alleged hallucinogenic effects of the substance thujone. Since 2005, the drink is permitted again in the Netherlands, however, with a much lower content of thujone (25 times lower). The drink is often slightly greenish in color and is traditionally drunk through a lump of sugar to be put on a special spoon over the glass, sprinkled with ice water. Nowadays, the sugar cube is also flambéed.
